Dark Day for Canada

On December 12, 2011, Minister of the Environment Peter Kent, announced that Canada would withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol on December 15, 2012.

Canada is the only nation that ratified the Kyoto Protocol to abandon its commitment.

Under the Protocol, Canada committed to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to 6% below our 1990 levels (589 Mt CO2e) by 2012. Thus our target was 554 Mt.

However, according to Environment Canada's 2010 report, our emissions were 692 Mt (25% above our Kyoto target.)

It is clear that the Harper Government values profits from the tar sands over a livable climate.
