Parkdale-High Park Constituents Highlight the IPCC Report on Global Warming of 1.5ºC., and call upon MP Arif Virani to Pledge

On October 24, 2018, approximately one year before the next federal election, many constituents, including members of Green 13, took time out of their schedules throughout the day to go to MP Arif Virani’s constituency office, and personally deliver:
• a copy of the summary report of the IPCC special report on global warming of 1.5 degrees C. of October 8, 2018.
• letters addressed to MP Arif Virani - calling upon him to pledge that, before the next election, he will propose, champion and support legislation to update Canada’s climate policies and bring them in line with the urgency called for in the IPCC special report.

October 24, 2018

Dear MP Arif Virani,

It was a relief, last Monday, October 15, to know that in the House of Commons MPs responded to the call of Canadians across our country and devoted six hours in emergency debate in the wake of the IPCC’s stark report on limiting global warming to 1.5ºC. From the account, it looks like 32 MPs out of 338 participated in the emergency debate: 15 Liberal MPs (out of 182), 9 NDP MPs (out of 41), 5 Conservative MPs (out of 97), 2 Bloc Québécois MPs (out of 10), and I Green MP (out of 1). Surely more than 10% of MPs should show up for such an existential debate. We thank you for being  among the 32 MPs who participated.

That emergency debate was a first step, but now we need emergency action. That is why I am delivering this letter on behalf of Green 13, along with a copy of the summary of the IPCC special report, and with a clear request of you:

On behalf of Green 13, I’m asking that you pledge that, before the next election, you will propose, champion and support legislation to update Canada’s climate policies and bring them in line with the urgency called for in the IPCC special report.

Right now, Canada has a climate plan that falls far short of what the science says we need. We need to strengthen our international climate commitments, stop fossil fuel expansion that scientists keep telling us our climate can’t handle, and build a 100% renewable energy economy that respects Indigenous rights, and works for every single person in Canada.

[... ]We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Rita Bijons and Paul Mero
Co-Chairs, Green 13

NB: Please note that after delivering the letter, we discovered that it was actually only 31 MPs rather than 32 who participated as we counted one Liberal MP twice. Therefore there were only 14 Liberal MPs, out of 182. Therefore it was only 9% of MPs who participated in this existential debate.
